Egg-based vs Cell-based Flu Vaccine
Not all flu vaccines are made the same way — and this season, there are two options available for private patients. Here's what you need to know to make the right choice for you.
Two vaccines, one goal
Both vaccines protect you against influenza and are approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). The difference comes down to how they're manufactured — and this year, that difference matters a little more than usual.
Standard flu vaccine — $24.95 The traditional flu vaccine has been used safely for decades. It's made by growing the flu virus in eggs, which is a well-established and effective process. In most seasons it provides strong protection, and it remains a very good choice.
Cell-based flu vaccine — $33.95 The cell-based vaccine is made without eggs, using a newer manufacturing process that more closely preserves the virus as it actually circulates in the community. This tends to result in a better match between the vaccine and the strains going around — which can mean slightly better protection, particularly in seasons where certain strains are dominant.
This season, health authorities have noted that the cell-based vaccine contains a more closely matched strain than the standard option. Both vaccines are safe and effective — but if you're weighing up the difference, this is the year where the cell-based option has a clearer advantage.
Frequently asked questions
Is the cell-based vaccine worth the extra $9?
For most people, yes — particularly this season. Research across multiple flu seasons has consistently shown that cell-based vaccines tend to provide modestly better protection than egg-based vaccines. The difference isn't dramatic at an individual level, but it's real and it's been reproduced in large studies year after year.
This season specifically, the two vaccines contain slightly different strains — with the cell-based version being the closer match to what's currently circulating. If you're looking for the best available protection and the cost difference is manageable, the cell-based vaccine is a reasonable upgrade.
That said, the standard vaccine is still effective and getting vaccinated with either option is far more important than which one you choose. If cost is a barrier, please don't let it stop you from getting vaccinated.
Can I have either vaccine if I have an egg allergy?
Yes — and this is something that has changed in recent years. Current guidelines from ATAGI (Australia's immunisation advisory body) confirm that people with egg allergies, including those with severe or anaphylactic reactions, can safely receive any approved flu vaccine, including the standard egg-based option. No special precautions are needed beyond the routine observation period that applies to everyone after vaccination.
The cell-based vaccine is egg-free, so it remains a perfectly good option if you'd prefer it — but you are not restricted to it based on allergy alone.
Which one does the pharmacist recommend?
For most private patients this season, our pharmacists lean toward the cell-based vaccine where cost is not a barrier — primarily because of the closer strain match this year. However, we're always happy to talk through your individual circumstances. If you have questions or you're not sure which is right for you, just ask at the counter or let us know in your booking and we'll set aside time to chat.
What about the flu vaccine for people aged 65 and over?
If you're 65 or older, the recommendation is a little different. Australian guidelines advise an enhanced flu vaccine for this age group — specifically either Fluad (an adjuvanted vaccine) or Fluzone High-Dose. These are not the same as the standard or cell-based options described above, and they're recommended because the immune system responds less strongly to vaccines as we age, so a more potent formulation is needed.
If you're 65 or over and eligible, this vaccine is available free of charge under the National Immunisation Program. Please mention your age when booking and we'll make sure the right vaccine is ready for you.
